Why Do Clothes Smell Musty After Drying Indoors?

Last Updated on October 24, 2026 by Umar Farooq

Why do clothes smell musty after drying indoors? Almost always because the fabric stayed damp for too long, so the microbes that live on every washed garment had time to multiply, or because the washing machine put the smell there before the clothes ever reached the airer. Fresh laundry does not smell of anything until something has had hours to work on it.

The useful question is therefore not “which detergent” but “where did the hours go”. Answer that and the fix is usually free.

Why do clothes smell musty after drying indoors: the damp that lingers

A wet garment is a warm, moist surface with a little food on it (skin oils, residual detergent). Left slowly drying in still, humid air, it sits in exactly the conditions bacteria and mould-like organisms like. The smell is what they leave behind, and it gets stronger the longer the fabric stays wet.

Indoor air makes this worse than a washing line does. Evaporation needs somewhere to put the water: the drier and moving the air, the faster the fabric dries. A shut room with a full airer of laundry is the opposite, because the clothes humidify the air around themselves and then stall. A load of washing puts several litres of water into a room,. I have not measured it for any particular load, so treat “several litres” as a ballpark.

For how long that takes in practice, how long clothes take to dry indoors has the measured times. The short version of the smell rule is my own judgement rather than a published threshold: if a load is still damp the next morning, it is already in smell territory.

Is it the room or the machine? One sniff test settles it

Before you rearrange the airer, check where the smell starts. Take a wet item out of the drum and smell it before it goes anywhere near the airer.

If the load smells sour straight out of the drum, the machine is the first suspect, not the airer.
  • Smells fine wet, musty once dry: a drying problem. Everything in the next two sections applies.
  • Smells sour or musty straight out of the drum: the machine. Residue builds up in the drawer, the door seal and the filter, and the smell transfers to the clothes. Persil’s cleaning guide says a musty or damp smell is a sign the machine needs a clean.
  • Fine for some loads, bad for others: usually an overloaded or cold wash, covered next.

Five habits that quietly bring the smell on

None of these is dramatic. Together they explain most musty loads.

Overloading the drum. A packed drum rinses and spins badly, so clothes come out wetter and with more detergent left in them. That fits what you can feel: an overfull load comes out heavy and slow to dry.

Washing cool, every time. Low-temperature washes are kinder to fabric and the electricity bill, but they leave more of the microbial load and residue behind. I am not telling anyone to wash everything hot: check each care label, and use a hotter wash only for the items that allow it, particularly towels, bedding and gym kit.

Leaving the wash in the drum. Ariel’s washing machine care page says to take clothes out promptly because they can start to smell, with “within 2 hours” as the best case. The clock on the drying starts the moment the cycle ends, not when you hang the clothes.

Too much detergent or softener. Excess product is not rinsed out, stays in the fibres and holds moisture. Use the dose for your water hardness and load size, not a generous glug.

Drying in a closed, humid room. The bedroom with the door shut and the radiator off is the classic. Shut the door and the humidity has nowhere to go.

Five fixes that stop clothes smelling musty indoors

This is not the full drying routine, which lives in how to dry clothes indoors without mould. It is the short list aimed squarely at the smell.

  1. Spin it as hard as the care label allows. Every spoonful of water left in the fabric is time added on the airer.
  2. Space the load. Air has to move between garments. A fully draped airer dries like a solid block, so hang fewer items and keep the heavy ones to the outside.
  3. Move the humid air out or take the water out of it. Open a window in another room, run a fan, or use a dehumidifier in a closed drying room. I wrote up when a dehumidifier helps with drying clothes if you want that route.
  4. Aim for dry within a few hours, not a day. If the room cannot manage it, split the wash into two smaller loads rather than one big one.
  5. Touch before you fold. Seams, waistbands and towel centres stay damp longest. Fold a cool, damp-feeling garment and you lock the smell into the cupboard, which is a separate problem covered in mould in a wardrobe.

The room humidity matters more than most people think. The EPA recommends keeping indoor relative humidity below 60 percent, ideally 30 to 50 percent, and a cheap hygrometer in the drying room shows you where you really are.

Rescue a musty load by rewashing before it dries again

If the smell is already in, the best moment to act is before the clothes go through a heated dryer or sit another night. Heat can set the smell, so rewash first.

  1. Rewash on the hottest cycle the care label allows, with your normal dose of detergent and no extra softener.
  2. Give it plenty of room in the drum so it rinses properly.
  3. Use the fastest drying method available for the second round: a well-spaced airer in the best-ventilated room, or outdoors if the weather helps.
  4. If the smell is still there after a proper rewash, suspect the machine and clean it before you wash those clothes a third time.

A garment that is stained with visible mould is a different matter, and mould on fabric has the decision on what to keep.

Clean the drum and drawer so the next load starts clean

If the sniff test pointed at the machine, this is the step that stops the rewash smelling the same.

Follow your machine’s manual first, and never mix cleaning products. Some manufacturers advise against certain descaling or bleach-based cleaners, and Persil’s own guide says to check the manual before using anti-limescale products.

  • Run an empty hot maintenance wash. Ariel suggests a monthly empty wash between 60 and 90 degrees Celsius; many machines have a drum-clean programme that does this.
  • Pull out the detergent drawer, soak it, scrub the residue with an old toothbrush and let it dry before refitting. Persil notes that leftover product in that dark, damp spot can encourage mould.
  • Wipe the door seal where it folds, and clear the drain filter if the manual points you to it.
  • Leave the door and drawer slightly ajar between washes so the drum dries out.

Musty laundry is a drying habit, not a detergent problem

Why do clothes smell musty after drying indoors? Because somewhere in the chain, whether in the drum, on the airer or in a closed room, they spent too many hours wet. The fix I would bet on is boring: lighter loads, a harder spin, some moving air, and a machine that is cleaned and left open. Swapping detergents rarely helps, and rewashing a musty load while the drum itself smells simply reintroduces the smell.

FAQ

Why do my clothes smell musty even after washing?

Either the machine is adding the smell, or the clothes stayed wet too long afterwards. Smell a wet item straight out of the drum: if it already smells sour, clean the machine; if it smells fine and turns musty as it dries, fix the drying.

How do I get the musty smell out of clothes dried indoors?

Rewash on the hottest cycle the care label allows, without extra softener, then dry quickly with space between garments. Rewash before the clothes go in a heated dryer, because heat can lock the smell in.

Can a dehumidifier stop clothes smelling musty?

It can help, because it lowers the humidity in the room so the clothes dry faster. It works best in a small, closed room with the clothes spaced out. It cannot fix a smell that comes from the washing machine itself.

Why do towels smell musty so quickly?

Thick fabric holds water for longest, so towels spend more hours damp than thin shirts. Spin them well, hang them spread out, and wash them on a hotter cycle if the label allows.

Is it the washing machine or the way I dry clothes?

Do the sniff test described above. A smell present straight out of the drum points to the machine. A smell that only appears once the clothes are dry points to the drying conditions.

How long can wet clothes sit in the washing machine?

Ariel suggests removing them within about two hours as the best case. The longer they sit, the more chance they start to smell before drying begins.
