How Far Should a Dehumidifier Be From a Wall? What the Manuals Say

Last Updated on October 25, 2026 by Umar Farooq

How far should a dehumidifier be from a wall? Leave at least 15 cm (6 in) clear around the air intake and outlet, and 20 to 30 cm (8-12 in) if you want a safe margin, unless your manual says otherwise. The exact figure depends on where your model’s vents are, which is why you will see three different numbers on three different websites.

I have read enough dehumidifier manuals to say this: the gap is rarely the thing people get wrong. The thing they get wrong is not checking which side the air comes out of before pushing the machine up to the skirting board.

Why the number differs between sources

The distance is really a rule about not blocking two openings: the intake, where room air goes in, and the outlet, where drier air comes out. A wall is a problem only if it sits in front of one of them.

Different manufacturers put their vents in different places and set their own figure. Here is what I could verify in documents I actually opened:

SourceClearance it gives
Which? (UK consumer advice)At least 20 cm from walls or furniture for most models
AlorAir Sentinel Elite manualAt least 6 inches (15 cm) around both the air inlet and outlet
Santa Fe Impact155 manualIntake or exhaust not within 1 foot (30 cm) of a wall or obstruction

Those are three honest answers to the same question. The spread, 15 to 30 cm, is the range you should expect.

Can a dehumidifier sit right against a wall?

Sometimes. Which? notes that some models, such as the Meaco Arete One range, can be positioned against a wall to save space. The usual reason is a vent on the top or a layout where the side facing the wall carries no intake.

If your unit has a front grille and a top outlet, the back and sides may be fine against a wall. If it has a rear intake or a rear outlet, it is not. You can check in thirty seconds: hold a sheet of paper near each grille while it runs and see which one pulls the paper in and which one blows it out.

What goes wrong when it is too close

Two things, and both are mechanical.

First, airflow drops. The machine treats less air each hour, so the compressor runs longer for the same result. Second, if the intake sits near the outlet, the machine can draw back its own dried air, so the room humidity it senses is lower than the real room. That can make it stop before the room is dry, a fault people often blame on the humidistat. That second point is my reading of how the airflow works, not something a manual spelled out, so treat it as reasoning rather than a test result.

Which number should you use?

Furniture against a wall is the other thing that blocks a vent. Leave the same gap in front of the intake.

I’d use the manual’s figure first, and 30 cm (12 in) if the manual does not give one. Fifteen centimetres is the minimum a manual gives to avoid blocking a vent. Thirty is a margin that also leaves room to pull the bucket out, reach the filter and keep curtains off the intake.

Two other things deserve space as well: a drain hose that needs a clear run, and a power cord that should not be pinched behind the unit. Where to put a dehumidifier deals with the wider layout, and if the machine sounds strained, a loud dehumidifier is sometimes just one jammed against a wall.

Where to find your own model’s figure

  1. Open the manual, or search the make and model with the word “manual”.
  2. Look under “installation”, “location” or “important precautions”.
  3. If it gives a distance in the intake and outlet section, use it.
  4. If the manual is silent, hold to 30 cm (12 in) on every side with vents, and 15 cm (6 in) on the sides without.

How far should a dehumidifier be from a wall? 15 cm is the floor, 30 cm is the habit

Far enough that neither vent is blocked and you can still get to the filter. In practice, a hand-width is the floor and a foot is the habit.

FAQ

Can a dehumidifier be placed against a wall?

Some can. Which? says certain models, such as the Meaco Arete One range, can sit against a wall. Check where your unit’s intake and outlet are, and read the manual before you push it back.

How much space does a dehumidifier need around it?

Manufacturers differ. One manual asks for 6 inches (15 cm) around the intake and outlet, another for 1 foot (30 cm), and Which? suggests 20 cm. Use your own manual’s figure, or 30 cm if it gives none.

Does it matter which way a dehumidifier faces?

Yes. Point the outlet away from walls, curtains and furniture so the dry air can spread into the room, and keep the intake clear so it can draw damp air in.

Is it fine to put a dehumidifier in a corner?

It is best avoided. A corner puts two walls near the vents and stops the air circulating. Move it into the open, even if that means a longer lead.

Can I put a dehumidifier next to furniture?

Treat furniture like a wall: keep the intake and outlet clear. Soft furnishings are worse, because curtains and sofa covers can be pulled against the intake.
