Can a Humidifier Remove Mold? No, and It Can Feed It

Can a humidifier remove mold? No: a humidifier adds water to the air, it does not clean surfaces or kill anything, and in a damp room it can make the problem worse. The word you are probably after is dehumidifier, and even that only stops mold growing; it does not remove what is already there.

One letter, opposite machines. I mention it first because it is the most common way this question gets asked, and the search results are full of dehumidifier pages that quietly answer a different question.

Humidifiers add moisture to the air. Removing mold is a different job.

Why a humidifier cannot remove mold

A humidifier puts water vapour or fine mist into the room. Mold needs moisture to grow, so adding moisture is the wrong direction. Nothing about the machine touches the mold itself: it has no scrubbing action, and I am not aware of any humidifier that is designed or sold to kill mold.

Mold on a wall or window frame is a surface problem with a moisture cause. The EPA puts it simply: the key to mold control is moisture control, and if you clean up the mold but do not fix the water problem, the mold will most likely come back. A humidifier is on the wrong side of that sentence.

What actually removes mold from a hard surface

Cleaning it. The EPA’s mold cleanup guidance says to scrub mold off hard surfaces with detergent and water, and dry completely. For small patches, that is a bucket, a brush and a dry cloth, not an appliance.

  • Small patch (EPA’s “less than about 10 square feet”): a householder can usually tackle it, as the EPA brief guide describes. How to get mould off walls covers the method.
  • Porous things like plasterboard, carpet underlay or ceiling tiles: if they are mouldy and soaked, wiping rarely rescues them, and replacement is often the answer.
  • Larger areas or significant water damage: that is a bigger job and the EPA suggests a more involved approach. If anyone in the house has health concerns, ask a doctor rather than a website.

I have separate pages on whether bleach kills mold and what to do about a musty smell with no visible mold, so I will not repeat them here.

Fix the water first, then use a humidifier or dehumidifier

Whatever feeds the mold has to go, or the cleaning is temporary. Typical causes are condensation on cold surfaces, a leak, or poor ventilation. This is also where the machines come in:

  • Dehumidifier: helps keep the air below the level where mold thrives. It prevents regrowth rather than removing mold, as my page on dehumidifiers and mold explains.
  • Humidifier: the opposite. If the room is damp, it should be off.

The EPA advises keeping indoor relative humidity below 60%, ideally between 30 and 50%. A cheap hygrometer tells you which side of that you are on.

Can a humidifier cause mold instead?

It can contribute. A humidifier does not make mold out of nothing, but it raises humidity, and a dirty tank can grow slime and mold of its own. That is covered in can a humidifier cause mold, including how to run one safely.

If you can see mold near your humidifier, the order is: switch it off, clean the surface, empty and clean the tank as the manufacturer’s manual says, and check the room humidity before you turn it on again.

Can a humidifier remove mold? No, so remove the damp instead

My opinion, and I will stand behind it: a humidifier and mold should never share a damp room. If you have mold, you want less moisture, so the humidifier goes in a cupboard until the room is dry and the wall is clean.

If your air is dry and you still want a humidifier, that is fine, as long as the humidity stays in the EPA range and the surfaces stay dry. Otherwise, scrub the mold off with detergent and water, fix whatever is wet, and let a dehumidifier or ventilation do the rest.

FAQ

Can a humidifier kill mold?

No. A humidifier adds moisture to the air and has no way of killing mold. Mold is removed by cleaning the surface, and prevented by controlling moisture.

Does a humidifier help with mold in any way?

Not in a damp home. Where air is very dry, a humidifier will not cause trouble if you keep humidity in the recommended range, but it does nothing to remove mold that is already there.

Does a dehumidifier remove mold?

It does not remove or clean mold either. It lowers humidity so mold has less to grow on, which helps stop it spreading. Existing mold still has to be cleaned.

What is the fastest way to remove mold from a wall?

For a small patch on a hard surface, scrub it with detergent and water and dry it completely, as the EPA advises, and then deal with the damp that caused it. Larger patches need a more involved approach.

Should I turn the humidifier off if I see mold?

Yes. Switch it off, clean the mold and the tank, and measure the room humidity before using it again. If the humidity is above about 60%, leave it off.
